Achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050
Accelerating change today for our collective future tomorrow
Our Net Zero commitment is across our entire value chain and greenhouse gas (GHG) footprint by 2050
We must limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees to prevent the worst Impacts of climate change. Since 2015, Mars has cut emissions in our full value chain by 7.3% (equivalent to the amount produced by a small city in a year) despite our business continuing to grow. Our Net Zero commitment includes all Scope 3 emissions too. That means we’re accounting for business travel, retail customer emissions, even the use of our products and services.
Our Commitment includes all of our Scope 3 emissions
We believe Net Zero targets should cover a company’s entire greenhouse gas (GHG) footprint, from how materials are sourced to how consumers use products
We’re accounting for our entire value chain
From farm to factory and through to how our products are shipped, sold and used, we’re including all emissions associated with our products and services.
We’ve made progress towards our short-term goal
We’ve already reduced emissions in our direct operations by 31% and are on-track to achieve our interim 2025 target (42% reduction).
Renewable electricity already makes up 54% of our global needs
We’ve made strong progress towards our commitment to reach zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in our direct operations by 2040 (including factories, offices, and veterinary practices). We now source 100% renewable electricity for the entirety of our direct operations in 11 countries, with plans to make the switch in another 8 countries by 2025.
Deforestation-free palm oil supply chain
Redesigning our supply chains
We’ve identified five key raw materials as having the greatest risk to deforestation: cocoa, beef, palm oil, pulp and paper and soy. Action will include a continued shift away from purchasing ingredients based on cost alone – and will focus on enhanced transparency and traceability around the commodities we source. We recently delivered a deforestation-free palm oil supply chain, and have a goal for all our high-forest risk commodities to be deforestation-free by 2025.
Challenging 20,000+ suppliers to take climate action
We’re prioritizing collaboration and partnership to drive change through our full value chain. This includes our Pledge for Planet program and the recently announced Supplier Leadership on Climate Transition (S-LoCT) which aims to encourage suppliers to calculate their own greenhouse gas (GHG) footprints and to set their own science-based targets. The program provides training and capability building with the ambition to sign up other brands to join and scale the project throughout the supply chain.

Strengthening our programs with farmers
We’re working directly with farmers and suppliers to promote improved agricultural practices, sustainable land use and to support science and technology, such as genomics (mapping genes) research, that pinpoints how to produce more resilient and higher yielding crops. We will also take further action to improve soil health to unlock crop yield potential and provide other environmental and climate change benefits.
